Information and Resources about furniture:

Furniture is the mass noun for the movable objects which may support

the human body (seating furniture and beds), provide storage, or hold objects on horizontal surfaces above the ground.

Storage furniture (which often makes use of doors, drawers, and shelves) is used to hold or contain smaller objects such as

clothes, tools, books, and household goods. (See List of furniture types.)

Furniture can be a product of artistic design and is considered a form of decorative art. In addition to furniture’s

functional role, it can serve a symbolic or religious purpose. Domestic furniture works to create, in conjunction with

Rustic furniture is a style of furniture that is made of

sticks, twigs or logs so it has a very natural look. There are many companies, artists and craftspeople who make rustic

furniture in a variety of styles and with a variety of historical or contemporary influences. There are a two basic

divisions of rustic furniture construction: bentwood, where sticks are harvested fresh or steamed to make them supple, then

bent into a variety of structures and decorative shapes; stick, where sticks, either straight, curved or forked are

assembled into structures and decorative shapes within the structure. Sometimes both divisions are used in the same piece.

Some rustic furniture makers use mortice and tenon construction, others simply nail or screw members together. Dan Mack, of

Warwick, NY (see danmack.com) is perhaps the most commonly mentioned and significant contemporary maker, having authored

several books on the subject. Ralph Kyloe (www.ralphkylloe.com) is major author of books on rustic furniture and related

topics. Read more
